Watch: just how much more powerful is the MY21 Supra than the MY20 Supra?

"Kaizen", or Continuous Improvement, is a term used by Nissan for their R35 GT-R ever since it was released in 2008. Instead of bringing in changes typically during facelift time, Nissan gradually improved the GT-R every year - and it resulted in peak horsepower going up from 473hp in 2008, to 566hp in the MY20 versions. And now, it looks like Toyota is taking a leaf out of Nissan's book for their icon, the GR Supra. It's only a year old, but there's already a host of changes on the way.

For MY21, there's a brand new entry-level model, powered by a 4-cylinder engine. It's the venerable B48 2.0 liter BMW unit, and non-JDM Supra models get the most powerful version, producing 255hp and 295 lb.-ft (there's an even cheaper base version in Japan with a 193hp version of the same engine). Using smaller front rotors, and without an active differential and adaptive suspension, it comes in at more than 200 pounds lighter than the 6-cylinder Supra.

But the big news is the 3.0 liter 6-cylinder version. Still using the BMW B58 motor, it features a twin-scroll turbo, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. But for 2021, it now comes with an extra 47 horsepowers, taking the total to 382hp. No tuning magic here - Toyota now simply uses the high-tuned version used in BMW models like the Z4 M40i and G20 M340i sedan instead of the more pedestrian, non-M BMWs.

But - how much power does it really make? Car and Driver took the opportunity to run the MY21 Supra on the dyno, and brought along a MY20 version just for good measure. Now it's worth pointing out that an MY20 tested by C/D previously actually made more power than advertised, so they wanted to see if the MY21 version really was making that much more.

Watch the video below to find the answer. And spoiler alert - you won't be disappointed...
