Watch: Mercedes debuts the AVTR Concept in the Middle East
Robotic Scales at the rear mimic a living organism
The Vision AVTR is how Mercedes Benz envisions the automotive future - vehicles that blend with the environment. One trying to become a living organism. The car debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show last year, and this year, it made its Middle East debut at the GITEX 2021 show.
Developed in collaboration with the filmmakers of AVATAR, the concept features distinctive inside-out styling inspired by creatures from the film. The car showcased its 33 active scales on its back, displayed at the Etisalat stand.
One doesn’t get pedals, a steering wheel or even a start button. You turn the car on by placing a hand on the control unit in the centre. Pressing the unit forward accelerates the car, and pulling it backwards engages reverse. You don’t turn the AVTR Concept, you make it crawl horizontally.
Mercedes thinks a definitive infotainment screen is very 2020 so the AVTR comes equipped with a menu selection feature that gets projected onto your palm. Clench your hands to select and slide it horizontally to swivel through the options. You can use it to skip between in-car functions like real-time 3D graphics.
With this being seen as the distant future of sustainable luxury mobility, Mercedes brought the current yardstick of luxurious mobility as well - the new all-electric EQS.
