Watch: Porsche 911 Carrera rally car gets thrown around German countryside
This must be as close to driving perfection as it gets
With its unique rear engine design and beautifully sounding flat-six engine, the Porsche 911 has always been hailed as one of the best driving experiences around. Mix that with an empty rally stage and a very capable co-driver and you’ve really got something.
In fact, it seems to have become a habit for some people with the means to invest in old Porsches with the aim of trying their hand at historic rallying. If you attend historic motorsport events, you’ll know what I mean as there are usually so many cars from Stuttgart around the paddock that they can’t be counted.
No wonder these cars are so popular amongst classic racers. Not only do they perform extremely well and are reasonably reliable, they also seem like a hoot to drive. Just check out this onboard footage of a rally driver pushing a Porsche 911 through a regional rally in Germany.
Thanks to its six-cylinder heart, the car sounds absolutely fantastic while it doesn’t look to be producing too much power for the driver to handle. With the rear engine layout, finding traction doesn’t appear to be much of a challenge either. That being said, you can see the effort going into the car’s body language on turn in. In fact, if the driver is too aggressive with the steering wheel, I’m sure a spin would be on the cards.
Unfortunately, the stages shown in the video are mostly made up of 90-degree turns which aren’t quite as tricky as flowing corners. Especially for a car like this. The course design does however give the driver a chance to open up the throttle and let the engine scream and shout, something I’m sure we can all enjoy.
