Watch: Rare high-quality footage from the 2003 F1 season

A German broadcasting company tried its new HD camera at the Hockenheimring...

Formula 1 in the current HD quality only came into action in the 2011 season, but way back in 2003 the FOM tested a HD camera in the pitlane during one of the practice sessions at the German Grand Prix.

At first glance, it looks like some reunion event shot last week, but when you look at how young Jean Todt is here - you'd be surprised to know it's actually from 2003, considering the usual F1 videos from then are usually found in absolute potato quality.

This footage is really refreshing. Makes me realize the world in 2003 wasn't actually in 360p and I might now start to believe that everything wasn't really black and white before the 1960s...

  • Add some V10 noises, quick cuts and tense music and we’d have a 2003 special of Drive to Survive!

    • I was watching the 2003 Brazilian GP the other day (I recommend it btw) and seeing *that* with all the rain and spray would’ve been awesome.
