Watch Smokey Nagata try for 200mph in his Supra

4y ago

Kazuhiko 'Smokey' Nagata is somewhat of a legend among the car community. Over the years he's been in trouble for numerous traffic violations for silly behaviour but that hasn't slowed him down at all.

Smokey is mostly known for founding the Japanese company Top Secret which over the years has produced successful drift cars that have won various events all over the world. Besides drifting they made seriously high performance cars like the Supra in the video below that was shipped over to the UK.

The whole point of shipping over this 1,000bhp monster was for Smokey to attempt to get to 200mph on the A1(M) that wriggles its way all the way up the UK. Although highly illegal, that didn't bother him.

He managed to achieve 197mph but was pulled over shortly after by the police and was arrested. He was chucked in the cells for the night and was ordered to pay £190 in fines, banned from driving in the UK for 28 days and was forced to leave the country the following day.

That may seem an extremely light punishment but remember this was back in 1999 when the law was a bit more relaxed compared to what we have today.

  • I remember this in Max Power magazine at the time. There weren't many cars that could do 200 back then. A lot less traffic too

  • For a run that epic, that's a relatively small price to pay
