Watch the new Jeep earn its spectacularly poor 1 star crash test rating

The new Jeep Wrangler has largely been met with warm praise since getting a revamp earlier this year. There certainly seems to be lots to like: the chunky styling and excellent off-road capabilities of Jeeps past remain, complimented by a much improved interior, more mod cons and the option of four doors.

However, it seems the new Jeep has an Achilles heel: namely its ability to protect its occupants.

Footage has been released of the 2019 Wrangler being crash tested, and it’s a poor showing. It performs well in most areas but several factors, including difficulty to instal child seats and - most crucially - a poor showing in the frontal crash test resulted in a dismal overall score.

Check out the footage below, along with footage of the much smaller Jimny’s test, which resulted in a 3 star score.

  • Back in my old auto parts days we joked Jeep = just expect every problem

  • I hate the fact cars get down marked on safety assistance systems. Is it that hard to use your brain and eyes when driving. The occupant safety didn't look that bad, I have seen worse (rover metro comes to mind)

    • metro is a rather low standard too...

    • By modern standards the Wrangler is terrible for occupant protection.

The test raised concerns with the dashboard and footwells collapsing and intruding into the passenger space.

  • The Brits just don't understand what real off-road 4x4ing is. They think this is it.

  • These vehicles are in two different class categories. The Jeep is being tested as a large off road vehicle and Jimny as a super mini.

  • Those 4-door "Wranglers" aren't really Wranglers anyway. They're just Durangos with a body kit.
