Watch the world's first hybrid Transit van accelerate like crazy!

But is it faster than the one prepared by Hammond, Clarkson and May?

Commercial vehicles seem dull. They are slow. They are big. They are mostly ugly. And they are way too sparsely equipped for a human being to be entertained. All seems lost for the customary delivery driver. But maybe not.

A YouTuber claims future commercial vehicles might be fun. With the advent of electricity in propulsion systems, vehicles no longer need to spool up to the powerband for better acceleration. The instant acceleration from the electric motor can be accessed during any moment in the drive, making overtaking manoeuvres look like a child's play.

We've seen electric hypercars crack the ton in around 2.5-second mark but how about seeing a Transit van do a nought-to-hundred run? This YouTuber managed to record the feat. Result? Not even minutely close to the hypercar territory, but the Transit van still managed to accelerate over the 100kph mark, maxing out at 125kph.

Although the recorded time of over 17 seconds doesn't seem exciting at all, don't forget, this is a van. A three tonne van, capable of seating eight people while carrying a battery and an electric motor in the back. To give some context, most vehicles exceeding the 10-second mark are gas-guzzling hatchbacks or entry-level SUVs.

However, there appears to be one small issue with the mash-and-giggle activity – range. Each depleting bar of electric charge will directly affect the performance of the van. As described in the video, the van doesn't appear to be using all of its potential power when the battery nears depletion. Instead of operating on its full capacity of 92.9kW, the van ran with 82 kW of power on tap. Maybe to preserve charge for an extended range.

By the looks of it, the electric-propelled van seems capable of making the driving experience fun, especially between the traffic lights. The customary delivery driver can enjoy a giggle by mashing the throttle and getting pushed back into the seat. Commercial transportation is finally getting ramped and amped up.

But then again, this isn’t the only fast Transit van around. If you can recall, there was another one presented by Clarkson, Hammond and May during the Top Gear Ashes. The van, which was covertly propelled by the engine from a Jaguar XJ220, decimated the 6.0-litre V8 Vauxhall Maloo pickup truck in a one-kilometre drag race. I’m not entirely sure of the eco-friendliness of this van, though...

  • I know it's a van, but 0-100 km/h in 17 seconds is ridiculous. The diesel is probably faster. Heck, my 1.0 fiesta does 0-100 in 9.5 seconds and still get's about 5.5l/100km on normal driving!

  • My uncle had a fairly new one for a work van and it constantly needed work doing to it

  • Transits are definitely not sparse these days. I rented one for a trip from Scotland to London to move lots of furniture. It had satnav, heated seats, cruise control, DAB radio and electric everything. Also did 40mpg over 500 miles.

    • Woah woah woah!

Was it the most recent model?

    • Yes, it was almost brand new. If you fancy a laugh and to waste hours of your life, go and play with the Transit configurator on the Ford website. It's amazing what you can spec.
