WATCH: This car started itself up because it was on fire

This is not what they had in mind with the 'self-driving cars' idea...

1y ago

Self-driving cars are becoming more and more popular due to the rise of Tesla. However, the car you are going to see below is not a self-driving Tesla; it is a self-driving Mini.

"But wait! There is no such thing as a self-driving Mini!"

That's true, but the reason why this Mini is driving itself is totally bizzare. On 25th December 2019, a man walked outside to find a Mini on the other side of the road that had burst into flames.

The fire was underneath the bonnet, and had spread through the gaps between the bonnet and the glass windscreen. The fire had spread to the engine, thus starting it up. Due to the car being in 1st gear, it started moving forward before hitting the poor car in front of it.

"I was walking by the river and I saw a fire, so I start filming."

You can hear the ignition trying to start up the engine as the car starts to roll forward and into the back of the car in front of it. The spectators could do nothing but phone the firebrigade and watch as it was too dangerous to approach it.

Almost 3 minutes into the video; the police arrive and approach the vehicle - which was burning more and more. The vehicle starts to pop and bang as components within explode, and the officers back away and stop people from coming down the road.

The video was filmed in Ljubljana, Slovenia; and must be the most frustrating thing to happen on Christmas Day. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Check out the video below:

  • “The fire then spread to the engine, which caused the fuel to be treated as if the car was running normally.”

What? Seriously? Read that back to yourself.

Congratulations; you just won a pair of clown shoes.

The car was left in gear, the fire burned through the electrics and engaged the starter motor.

    • Haha, I've just seen this comment. I wrote this article pretty late, so I don't think I was concentrating properly. I've made an adjustment now - and have also learned to pay more attention!😂

    • Can only imagine the fire shorted the starter motor / ignition, while it was left in first gear.

"Im a cool red mini, ON Fire!,, for vengeance sake, Im going to damage this blue car in front of me" 🤪

    • I park in first gear to stop the car rolling away (steep driveway and dodgy handbrake), there is nothing wrong with parking in first, I wouldn't expect my car to drive away lol

  • Same thing happened to me. 18 years old...I drove an MG I bought for fifteen quid through a bonfire at high speed. You know...for a giggle 😂 Forgot to shut one window...crap came in and set fire to my hair and jumper. I jumped out doing about 20mph. Put myself out by rolling on the grass. Car had rolled to a halt and was burning...then it started pulling away!...towards a river! I had to dive back into it to pull the handbrake up. Worst thing was the fireman who attended had dealt with me two days before when I collected a lamppost in my BMW E30. His face when he got out of the truck and saw me again 😂
