In case you hadn’t heard of it, last weekend Silverstone racing circuit opened its doors to a race. That race being the British Grand Prix which may or may not have been subjected to one of the most controversial moments in the 2021 F1 season.

Before any of that took place, Channel 4 visited the track to film its traditional opening sequence and promotional videos. As ever, there was a surprise in store for viewers of the show when Tom Cruise appeared on-screen alongside the usual trio of presenters; Steve Jones, Mark Webber and David Coulthard.

In an intense shot showing the three gentlemen in a pair of Porsche 911 GT3s, Tom Cruise flies by them referencing the upcoming Top Gun Maverick film. With countless quotes being used from the original 1986 flick and flashes to shots from the movie slated for release later this year, the sequence is a mix of cringe and nostalgia. That being said, any fan of Top Gun and fast cars will appreciate the effort into merging the two.

As Cruise recites lines from the film like “That’s right Iceman, I am dangerous” and “I feel the need, the need for speed”,” Steve and the gang look like a bunch of bumbling buffoons. When Tom says, “I could tell you but I’d have to kill you,” Mark’s reaction is hilarious.

Before long, the three sportscars speed off down the Hangar Straight towards Stowe to the sound of Highway To The Danger Zone.

The banter between Tom Cruise and Mark Webber is brilliant as the action star quotes him saying “Not bad for a number two driver,” the famous line the Australian delivered after winning the 2010 British GP.

To top off the cringe, the video ends with the four guys reference the bar scene when the pilots start singing You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.

Whether you found that a great homage to an excellent film or a little too shameful for your taste, it was a great way to remind you that Top Gun: Maverick will be hitting the silver screen from November 17 of this year.
