Watch: Toyota Supra VS C8 Corvette drag race – Who will win?
The two most anticipated sportscars of 2020 battle it out on the drag strip but who will win?
As many years of motoring programs on TV have taught us, there’s no better way to put two cars up against each other than a drag race. Top Gear would always organise ¼ mile sprints between similar cars and Motor Trend has gotten into the habit of putting together the top cars of each year on an airfield, just to name a few.
This year’s most hotly awaited motors have been the Toyota Supra and the all-new, mid-engine C8 Corvette. Despite one being far more suited to straight line racing than the other, the idea of the two sportscars sprinting to the end of a strip is very appealing. Thankfully, as soon as both an A90 Supra and a C8 Corvette arrived at the same event, they were rushed to the start line and the whole thing was filmed by High Tech Corvette.
So, what do we have in this race? Well, first up is the Toyota Supra. Although the Japanese car has been criticised for not being very Japanese due to its heavy BMW influence, there’s no denying it’s a great car. With a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-6 engine sending 255hp to the rear wheels and weighing just 1,500kg, it’s a real B-road toy.
Next up is the Corvette. For the first time ever, the Corvette’s 6.2-litre V8 is mid-mounted meaning it has great weight distribution. It also means that all 495 horses are sent easily into the tarmac thanks to the added weight over the rear axle helping acceleration. Coming in at around 1,500kg as well, it’s hard to see how the Supra has a chance.
In fact, with a time of 12.11 seconds to complete the quarter mile hitting a top speed of 118mph, the Corvette absolutely trashed the little Japanese Supra. However, with more renowned handling than the American muscle car, the Toyota may have a better chance on a twisty British country road or racetrack.
