What can be better than sitting on a cold driveway with a camping light and torch, working on your car? The joys of working during the short, English winter days! Can you guess what job I had to do?

What started as a slightly noisy wheel bearing, developed into a very noisy wheel bearing over a few days. With the car jacked up, I could barely tell which wheel had the issue. Luckily, I noticed it was louder when turning left than right due to weight transfer.

  • I had been told by the previous owner that a wheel bearing had just been replaced, but I forgot to ask which side! There was no noticeable play in either front wheel but the offside wheel did sound slightly more grumbly when turning the wheel by hand. Not easy to tell with the normal noise of brakes dragging slightly. Over a couple of days, the noise got worse and there was a minor vibration in the steering wheel that matched the thrum, thrum, thrum noise, which was worse at around 45mph. At this point, I did find that right turns quietened things down due to the weight shifting to the left of the car. Thankfully, I got the right one and the car is quiet and smooth once again.
