What Features are Cars Missing?

Car makers are missing features we want. What's yours?

This came up today as I'm trying to find a decent solution for mounting my phone on the dashboard so I can use the GPS. The thing is, the car I'm driving has GPS. However, like most in-built GPS systems, it's complete crap and Google maps or Apple maps is better.

Yes, we're approaching the end of the 2nd decade of the 21st century and the map in your pocket is better than the one installed in most cars. That goes for entire infotainment systems. What you carry in your pocket is better than most, and I'll bet the vast majority of us just hook to Bluetooth and listen to music and directions from our phones.

So, why hasn't an automaker figured out a way to mount our phones in a recess on the dashboard? Yes, they're all different sizes, but all the automakers R&D departments have huge budgets to employ people to figure things out.

There's another basic one. Whenever my wife gets in a car to drive, she either puts her handbag on the passenger seat or in a passenger footwell. This is not a new thing, yet nobody has come up with a solution to store a small bag for the driver. Many men have to take a bag as well, but the vast majority of women do, and as many women drive cars as men.

So, this begs the question: What feature do you think has been overlooked and you would you like to see added either as a standard feature or as an option?

  • How about cars equipped with drivers who actually pay attention and know how to drive.

How about subtracting distractions from our cars instead of adding useless gadgets.

Why don’t we concentrate on making the roads better.

    • My 1995 520i had not a single cupholder....2001 A6 it had 2 and they were flip down jokes. Because you should do ONE thing behind the wheel. Drive. Not knit, text, call, take selfies, read, eat, etc

  • I'd like to see FINS again please! :) Seriously, how come nobody can build a car with a bit of style nowadays?

    • Bring back the 1960 caddy style. Im more of a function over form individual and would feel more at home in any true sports car. However there is so much more to every automobile. I have yet to see any manufacturer implement this type of styling...

    • Cadillac going down the road of trying to be American BMW was a mistake. I concur. They need to go old school with the pure comfort and style thing.

  • The most important feature modern cars missing is simplicity, just put a bigass v8 and a manual transmission and we're happy. 😀

  • Photochromatic windows. I can get eyeglasses that darken, why not car windows? 10% will do.

Bluetooth connectivity is OK. "Infotainment" systems aren't. Handsfree calling as well.

Automakers just need to stop and think: "If this would make for a freestanding crap tablet or phone, why would I, or anyone, want it?"

    • I concur. It should also have a feature where it automatically goes off when the passenger starts singing along to something.
