The "Race Gear" joke has been around for quiet a while, but what actually happens when you shift into reverse at high speeds? To find out, many hotheaded youtubers carried these experiments for the pure purpose of Science. And entertainment. Mainly entertainment...
Will this kill your engine? Fry your gearbox? Blow the car up? Well there is one way to find out...

It's km/h not kph! Stop this nonsense! Mph people can't impose their own abbreviations on another system. And we made it km/h.
Notivced that to bugged me a bit
It depends on where you come from. I've been to places were kph is actually used in road signs. Km/h is technically the right term but still...
Just ask a learner driver. I did that, albeit at a lower speed. Nothing awfully dramatic happened, it just made a funny noise and slowed down. I found it quite disappointing. An explosion of some description was my minimum expectation really.
I thought it would have been more damaging to be honest
Can't imagine doing this in an auto. It'd probably tear the inside brake rings and cogs to shreds.
The gearbox won't be a gear box anymore, just bits of metal 😂
Modern autos nothing will happen, it won’t even go into reverse ECM won’t allow it or some actually lock the shifter so won’t allow you to shift in R while moving.
I can remember asking my Mum this when I was a little boy. She didn't have an answer which I found frustrating. So thanks guys!
Yea, these guys deserve to be thanked I would have never known if it weren't for them
This is utter crap.
A car won't go into reverse when moving forwards unless it's been tweaked, or has a serious problem.
Many can be forced. Used to do it on gravel roads in my old dodge power wagon at 40 mph all the time. I was 16 and didn’t care I was wrecking things.
You should try it mate just to be sure
