What if Lincoln made the Navigator in the late 70s?

In an alternate universe, Lincoln launched a full-size luxury SUV in the midst of a fuel crisis.

I have a relatively large soft spot for Malaise Era cars. Anything that rose from the ashes of the fuel crisis in the 1970s is spectacular. So allow yourself to be whisked away to the alternate timeline where Lincoln launched the Navigator in 1970 when they launched the fifth-generation Continental. Better yet, allow the work of wb.artist20 to paint that picture for you.

This image is what would come up next to the word "land-yacht" in that universe. The Navigator, or in this case, the "Continental Navigator" as Lincoln would have likely called it, is what happens when you splice a '78 Town Car and a Suburban. I have reason to believe that this would have become the new standard for celebrities and executives alike, towering over the commoners, with Lincoln's 460 cubic inch V8 rumbling under the hood. Pre 1972 numbers for that engine are 365 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque, which would move this likely 6,000 pound goliath from zero to the next gas station in about a calendar year, assuming you can keep enough fuel in the tank to make that happen.

In terms of design, I think the 70s version is exactly the kind of machine that would've been built back then, opera windows and all. It's also interesting to put both of these next to each other, and see different design cues on the modern version, such as the divots in the grille that seem to match where the bumper juts out on the older version, or how the fender lines turn into character lines in the same sort of fashion.

All in, this is one design that I can get behind, and something that could have put Lincoln in a league of its own during the Malaise Era. I can only imagine the kinds of interior options that would've been available, and all of the ways that these would've been hot-rodded.

Would you have put this Navigator in your driveway? Comment Below!

  • Interesting! I have seen cool renders like this before, one that I specifically loved was a render of if the Cadillac Escalade came out in 1959. This was made by Abimelec Design.

  • I'd roll any squared Lincoln or Caddy in the 70's. Actually, if it was possible, I'd have it made now with restomod underpinnings and have it over any modern nonsense SUV, such is Bentayga, DBX or modern Navigator or Escalade.

  • I think it would just be a Jeep grand wagoneer with a Lincoln badge on it 🤷‍♂️
