What Is Synthetic Fuel
Porsche recently announced that they would be trialling synthetic fuelled cars next year and this got me thinking what is synthetic fuel because I have never heard of it like many others. So I decided to write this article to explain what synthetic fuel is.
How Synthetic fuel is made?
Synthetic fuel is produced by splitting water in to two gasses hydrogen and oxygen with the help of electricity. The hydrogen along with the CO2 from the atmosphere is then converted into Synthetic liquid fuels. The best part about this system is that it is entirely carbon neutral for example the electricity does not come from a power station it come from renewable sources of energy and the CO2 is gathered from the air where the CO2 is filtered out for biofuel.
Something that I like about biofuel personally is the fact that any modern car can run on Synthetic fuel which will be great for people who can't afford a new car or who want to keep their current car.
The disadvantages of synthetic fuel
The main disadvantages of synthetic fuels are high gas yield and high hydrogen consumption compared to petrol where the main disadvantages are polluting the environment, The fact that fossil fuels aren’t renewable and drilling for fossil fuels is a dangerous process so as a long term solution synthetic fuel is a great option.
When can we see this fuel in cars?
Synthetic fuelled cars are already being tested by Porsche and they are starting to trial these cars next year and by 2025 experts believe that petrol cars will become carbon neutral could we only be a few years away from cars producing no carbon dioxide.
Why I think Synthetic fuel will save manual cars.
Manual cars have been dyeing out since automatics started becoming a common thing that you saw in cars. But manual cars were at risk of becoming non existent faster because of the impact that petrol and diesel cars had on the environment. But I think that manual cars will come more common when more manufactures switch over to synthetic fuel because if you buy a new car that offers a manual transmission it will be cheaper then automatic. Another reason why I think people will start driving manual cars is because some people think that driving manual uses more fuel and damages the environment more then automatics because you can rev higher but with petrol and diesel cars going to be zero emissions hopefully people will realise that manuals are just as good for the environment as automatic and even more fun to drive on a open road or racetrack.
Where was Synthetic fuel first produced?
Synthetic fuel was first produced in Germany in 1919 where they converted coal into synthetic fuel at one point there were 25 factory’s including 10 in the Ruhr area and 7 underground hydrogenation plants where planed to be built for bombing prevention after synthetic oil plants where bombed but none where completed due to Germany believing that the war would be won before the bunkers would have been completed. I don’t really know a lot about this kind of history so I am going to stop this section before I give wrong information.
This is what Synthetic fuel is. I hope you enjoy reading this article if you did then please consider following me on DRIVETRIBE.
