Let's not beat around the bush. The new Ford Fiesta ST is the best hot hatch on sale. Without a doubt.
The last one was good. Great even. This new one, though, well, it's tremendous. Fantastic. Brilliant. Darn near perfect.
As you may expect, there are many reasons for this. We've compiled three of our favourites to prove it to you:
1. The Engine is Unbelievable
When Ford announced that the new ST would be coming with a 1.5L 3 cylinder, I went into cardiac arrest. To say I was shocked, would be an understatement. For 3 weeks I lay dormant in a coma, unreachable. It wasn't until one of the nurses had the bright idea of playing a short video of the ST's exhaust note to me that I snapped awake. It is a soul-moving noise. Unbelievably so.
Hand on heart, it sounds like a 911-mini-me.
2. It Doesn't Care Much for Speed
Yes, it'll dispatch the frankly overrated 0-100km/h sprint in a sprightly 6.5 seconds but to be honest, the ST cares far more about drowning you in a puddle of adrenaline. It may be front wheel drive (as God intended the hot hatch to be), but the way it grips in corners is truly astonishing. Like dried weet-bix on a cereal bowel- it just... sticks.
3. The Price is Astonishing*
*It should, that is, when it finally arrives.
The last ST retailed (here in Aus) for under $30,000. The new one is expected to follow suit when it does finally arrive on dealership shelves in early 2019. That is, as I'm sure you'd agree, absolutely staggering value for money. It's this incredible price that puts the ST in a league of its own. Volkswagen's Polo GTi, Peugeot's 208 GTi and Renault's Clio RS are all within a similar ballpark, however, none of them whets the hot-hatch-taste-buds quite like the ST.
A Polo GTI is a smoked salmon entree. Classy, however, it doesn't quite hit the spot. The Fiesta? Well, it's a classic chicken parmigiana. Not quite as sophisticated, but it leaves you... full, satisfied. Content. No matter how many times you order it, you never leave the restaurant regretting your decision. It's just so... right. Delicious.
That said, we understand that there are other people in the world who think differently. People who think the Fiesta ST isn't the best hot hatch on sale. These people, these 'misguided souls' as we like to call them, are wrong.
Nonetheless, I hereby extend an invitation to all hot hatch fanatics to voice their opinion below. Are we right? Or are we right? I eagerly await the roast.
