  • This is a tough question because it depends on when in the 50's. The Nash Healey is significant because it's the 1st post-war American sports car, and it predates the Corvette. The Hudson Hornet was unibody and low, compared to anything else when it was released. Cars were pretty much body on frame and tall until the Hudson. The Studebaker Golden Hawk could be had with a supercharger and a free-wheeling transmission (if I remember correctly).

    It's easy to pick the "big names" because they're popular. The Chrysler 300? There were Hemi's before the 300, and revered as that engine was back then, it was high maintenance. It was also stuffed into an impossibly heavy car, that was basically a restyled Newport. The Chevy Bel Air was style without substance. The TBird had style, but the rest was parts-bin. The first year 'Vette wasn't "all that", just style. I'll give a nod to Cadillac only because Cadillac was ahead of the game before the war, but it was all about style.
