The Porsche 912 was an entry-level variant of the Type 911. It was fitted with a 4-cylinder engine. Porsche marketed the 912 as a lower price 911. Their aim was to appeal to new Porsche customers who wanted not only reliability, but the styling of the type 911 .
Porsche produced the 912 from 1965 until 1969. It also briefly manufactured it again during the mid 1970s.
The 912 was a commercial success for Porsche. When it was first released it even outsold the Type 911. This was assisted by the fact that the 912s lower price made it more affordable than the 911 .
At a lower price the Porsche 912 had fewer features than the 911, but its balance and handling were well received. Other 912 models followed, including the Targa. Porsche discontinued the 912 after the 1969 model year.

Re-Introduced as the 912E
Six years after the 912 had been discontinued Porsche decided to re-introduced the 912 in 1975 as the 912E. This model was only available in the United States. The 912E became the entry level model to replace the gap left by the outgoing Porsche 914.
Production of the 912E lasted until 1976 and sales were strong. The 912E was replaced soon after by the front-engined Porsche 924. The Porsche 924 became the new entry level model for Porsche.
