When someone says the word 'supercar' what do you instantly think of? Do you think of a Ferrari Testarossa? Or maybe a Lamborghini Aventador? Or do you think about a Porsche 911?

Many people have many varying views on what the benchmark supercar is, but I have some ideas as to what it could be. To me, when someone says the word 'supercar' I instantly think of either a Ferrari 458 Speciale or a Lamborghini Huraacan.

To me, these are the go-to supercars as well as the Aventador. A supercar is something which is loud, has crazy looks, is mostly impractical, usually expensive, fast and has two seats. However, so many cars are becoming fast these days, it's hard to decide what a supercar is. I wouldn't ordinarily call the Porsche 911 Turbo S a supercar, but since the 991 it has become one.

The universal benchmark supercar has to be one which everyone thinks of, is the most popular and is probably owned by every single influencer under the sun. This is why something Italian (okay it's mostly German but you get the idea) like the Huracan springs to mind.

I would be interested to know what you view as the universal benchmark supercar as we are all different ages, have different experiences and varying opinions. Comment below what you instantly think of when someone says 'supercar' and tell me why you chose it.

  • To minds trapped in the 90s, the McLaren F1.

    • I can’t argue with that. It’s iconic because everyone knows it. But was that the beginning of the Hypercars instead of supercar?

    • I have as much respect for the hypercar vs supercar debate as I do for people who interrupt reasonable discussion about muscle cars with 'but is it a pony car?'

  • Ferrari F40,still an Outrageous Poster Child

The Ferrari F40 is an incredible vehicle, a refugee from an alternate universe in which Ferrari entered Group B rallying with a fury

    • Yep. I think a lot of people will opt for that. And rightly so.

  • I’d have to say the Miura, it’s the very first supercar and it set the mid-engine layout which is the standard to this day
