What is Your Favorite Underappreciated Car?

What cars do you like that you feel deserve more love and attention in general?

There are many legendary cars out there that are worthy of the accolades bestowed upon them, and in almost equal measure cars vile enough to warrant the shade thrown their way. But what about the cars that were deserving of our praise, yet never received it in substantial enough measure? Of course, there is the Toyota MR2. Even though it was eclipsed by the Supra, AE86, and to a lesser extent the Celica GT-Four, in turbo form it still could humiliate the Ferrari Mondial and keep up with the 348. It even could take on the FD RX-7 and NSX. Despite this, the MR2 is a bargain compared to the over-inflation of many of the above-mentioned cars. My question is, what car do you feel is underappreciated and deserves more recognition from the car community?

  • The Porsche 959 surely deserves more respect than an F40, so I'm going with it.

    • Yes. Probably the more outrageous F40 attracted more publicity than the 959. Still a very clever and innovative car, and a crucial stepping point towards the emergence of the hypercar.

    • I agree it took a Ferrari F40 to beat it I think that this should be a great stepping point for people who thinks the F40 is a great car it’s not the 959 is

  • VW Phaeton. I know it's probably gotten its fair share of recognition or has started to, it I'm still including it. It had Bentley levels of luxury for a fraction of what a Bentley cost at the time. I know VW and luxury cars don't go together, but all of Piech-era VW was rather interesting. I mean you had the Touareg and it's V6, V8, and even a V10 option. The VR6 GTI's and R32's. The Phaeton and its range topping W12. Heck, you even had the Passat W8. You could most of those with a stick shift. VW was just awesome af at that time, they still are, but Piech era VW was just badass...

    • I agree. The Phaeton was supposed to be Piech's swan song, his magnum opus, yet most people who see one on the road think its just another Jetta.

  • Saleen S7 or SLR McLaren

    • The Saleen S7 is a very good answer. People do seem to have forgotten it, sadly. The McMerc appeared to have its 15 minutes of fame in the early 2000s but newer and shinier cars quickly stole the limelight.

    • Yeah, sad for both cars. I like the S7 a lot though.

  • Nissan Pulsar GTI-R

    • Excellent answer. Nissan's own Group A competitor to the Impreza WRX, Lancer Evo, Delta Integrale, Celica GT-Four, and Escort RS Cosworth.

  • I personally love the F355 Berlinetta. Gorgeous car with decent performance, Mid engine RWD, MT and is affordable for a Ferrari. Just that it is tttttttooooooooo expensive to maintain

    • I agree with you. I desperately want a manual F355 Berlinetta in Blu Tour de France with a cream interior. It's a bit like Clarkson and his F355: "I have to have one"
