What Makes a Perfect Road?

Is there such a thing as the perfect road for all drivers and all occasions or is it too subjective and dependent on the car?

The other morning I was up and about early and killing time before heading off to work. The sun was out, the Alfa Spider on the drive, and some lovely Yorkshire country roads less than a mile away. The temptation was too much. I could have a quick 15 minute loop of the almost empty roads and then head off to work. Perfect.

This is what makes the title of this tribe such an interesting one. For me, at that moment in time, with that car, the road was perfect. Later on in the day, or in a different car, or with more time to spend, it probably wouldn't be.

Later on we headed north for 30 minutes and out to Blakey Ridge in the North Yorkshire moor. It wasn't a time for going quickly, just driving the roads and taking things in. This was the perfect road for the spring evening.

In the past couple of years I've driven a few of the Swiss and Italian mountain passes. Only two rivalled these particular drives due mainly to the weather not being quite right or there being too much traffic. They were great to drive just missing something at that moment.

So what makes a Perfect Road?

  • Any road so long as it's empty, and none of those pesky pigs running around on it.
