  • What makes American cars cool? The combination of Hollywood, the V8, and our imaginations! McQueen in his Bullitt Mustang, the Duke boys in the General Lee, the Bandit in his Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, "Eleanor" in Gone in 60 Seconds, the list goes on. Movie magic. Sure, in reality a GTR or a 911 Turbo would probably run rings around the muscle cars on a track, but we want to believe these cinema legends are invincible. An F-16 could blow a P-51 Mustang out of the sky, but I know which one I prefer.

  • I think what makes American cars so appealing is the simplicity combined with the history. American cars are supposed to be rugged cast iron and simple. Combine that with underdog racing and it makes for a mystical attraction.

  • The Shelby GT350, a machine of a Texas wizard, and the Dodge Viper ACR, a value-driven Lamborghini are two of my favorite American machines. I enjoyed a 50th Anniversary Hertz Shelby GT350 rental in Southern California a few short years ago. Malibu, Mel’s Diner, Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica, USC-UCLA Coliseum match, maybe some old school boulevard hustling within ten minutes of getting out of the Hertz lot. We did it all. Fifty years prior, my father and grandfather enjoyed the same experience with the original Hertz Shelby GT350. That was something special to hear I had the opportunity to share in a bit of that history. That being said, when is Hertz going to bring back some Italian bulls.
