What was the first car you fell in love with?
For me it was the 2004 Subaru WRX STi. In WR Blue Pearl. With the spoiler. Gold rims. And the STi logo where the fog lights would normally be.
I was 14 years old and a punky rebellious girl. The STi was small and aggressive and angry. And it looked and sounded unlike anything else I saw on the roads.
I was already a motor sports enthusiast. I had been attending Formula 1 races since 2002 and watching since around 1999. I had seen some pretty amazing cars in the lots at the races, and I’m kind of embarrassed to say that I brushed them off.
But that STi was the car that got me into cars, that made me think they were more than just a way to get from point A to point B. And it opened a world to me that I never knew existed, the world of being a car enthusiast.
I didn’t know it at the time that I was living in a time when amazing new cars were coming out every month. But as I sought to learn more about this amazing blue Subaru, I discovered about a million other cars. I discovered that other car enthusiasts existed. I discovered Top Gear. I discovered motoring forums.
I actually paid attention to the cars in the lots at the F1 race that summer. I started paying attention to the cars on the roads. I researched cars and their history and everything about them.
The 04 STi wasn’t just the first car that I fell in love with, it is the car that changed my life.
