What's the best car you've seen on the street?
Spotting a supercar on the public highways has the power to enrich your entire week - regardless of whether you’re a car enthusiast or not. In the “nice car” hierarchy, BMW M’s are fairly common - and tend not to be in sight long enough for people to admire them. Porsches are also relatively commonplace, at least relative to other performance cars.
Ferraris tend to arouse a more interesting “owww” in people as they blast on by with their traditional high-pitched soundtrack. Lamborghinis on the other hand tend to elevate people’s interest even further due to their combination of aesthetic pizzazz and aural savagery. Seeing anything on the road that’s considered to be in a higher class than a Lamborghini is an exceptionally rare thing outside of LA and London.
Out of all the exciting cars I’ve seen on the public highways over the years, there are 3 that shook me more than any others. The first - and most recent - was when I saw a McLaren P1 in Asda carpark. Seeing the P1 in such an environment was rather like seeing Claudia Schiffer down your local high street; the two just didn’t marry up. But regardless, I stood there aghast at what I was looking at.
Another time, I was on my way back home, on a congested bit of road a stones throw from where I live. Then, as the cars parked on the left of the road subsided, the single lane of traffic split into two, and the scatter of vehicular proles surrendered an automotive jewel: a Pagani Zonda F Roadster. Once again, I was left breathless at what I was looking at.
Finally, when I was a child, while travelling along the same congested piece of dual carriageway, I saw the dark blue perfection of a McLaren F1. With my car obsession in its infancy, I was still well aware of what I was looking at. I sat back and shook, for I was looking at what was the fastest car in the world at the time.
Those are the cars that stand out for me. But now, it’s time for me to throw the question back to you: what’s the best car that YOU’VE seen on the public roads? Let me know in the comments.
