What's the best sounding car ever made?
The sound a car makes has a profound connection to the amount of enjoyment you can have in it. Doesn’t matter how finely balanced the chassis is, or how tactile it feels, if it doesn’t make the right noise, it becomes significantly less engaging. Think Porsche 718, and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.
Since a car’s musical quality is so important then, I thought I’d ask the question: what’s the best sounding car ever made? We’ll all have an opinion on this. And a quick delve through the archives reveals some legends...
Coming instantly to mind is the Lexus LFA. Also fighting in the V10 camp is the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. In the realm of the V8 however, there’s the Aston Martin Vantage GT8, the Shelby Mustang GT350R, the Jaguar F-Type SVR, and the Ferrari 458 Speciale.
As far as V12s go, there’s the Aston Martin Vanquish S, the Aston Martin One-77, the Ferrari LaFerrari, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, and the Pagani Zonda 760RS. And then, using just 6-cylinders, you have the Porsche 991.2 GT3 RS, and the Singer 911 DLS.
All of these cars sound fantastic, and it’d be easy to understand why somebody would think any of them was the greatest sounding car in history. For a little alternative suggestion, there’s the Cizeta V16T. While the car itself never reached the hypercar-heights it could’ve, it’s 6L V16 engine sounded demonic. Have a listen...
As a wildcard, I would like to say what I personally believe to be the best sounding car of all time: one that doesn’t have my wife in the passenger seat asking “can we go shopping?”. But beyond all the suggestions I’ve listed here, and anything else you can think of, I want to know what YOU think is the greatest sounding car of all time? Let me know in the comments.
