What's the best sounding car ever made?

It's a simple question that we'll all have an opinion on: what's the greatest sounding car in history? Let me know in the comments...

The sound a car makes has a profound connection to the amount of enjoyment you can have in it. Doesn’t matter how finely balanced the chassis is, or how tactile it feels, if it doesn’t make the right noise, it becomes significantly less engaging. Think Porsche 718, and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

Since a car’s musical quality is so important then, I thought I’d ask the question: what’s the best sounding car ever made? We’ll all have an opinion on this. And a quick delve through the archives reveals some legends...

Coming instantly to mind is the Lexus LFA. Also fighting in the V10 camp is the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. In the realm of the V8 however, there’s the Aston Martin Vantage GT8, the Shelby Mustang GT350R, the Jaguar F-Type SVR, and the Ferrari 458 Speciale.

As far as V12s go, there’s the Aston Martin Vanquish S, the Aston Martin One-77, the Ferrari LaFerrari, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, and the Pagani Zonda 760RS. And then, using just 6-cylinders, you have the Porsche 991.2 GT3 RS, and the Singer 911 DLS.

All of these cars sound fantastic, and it’d be easy to understand why somebody would think any of them was the greatest sounding car in history. For a little alternative suggestion, there’s the Cizeta V16T. While the car itself never reached the hypercar-heights it could’ve, it’s 6L V16 engine sounded demonic. Have a listen...

As a wildcard, I would like to say what I personally believe to be the best sounding car of all time: one that doesn’t have my wife in the passenger seat asking “can we go shopping?”. But beyond all the suggestions I’ve listed here, and anything else you can think of, I want to know what YOU think is the greatest sounding car of all time? Let me know in the comments.

  • It's a bit like asking what the best piece of music is. It varies from day to day.

  • Carrera GT, Porsche GT3 2018, any Maserati GTS, One-77, Audi R8 V10, Mercedes 7.3 (any model; its about the engine), Porsche 918 (I don’t know why but I heard one kick down one time and just loved the weird sound)

    Those spring to mind

AND (please hear me out here) the Tesla Model S

(NOT A JOKE) I love the subtle acceleration whine/wizzing, there is nothing like it; it’s like Knight Rider in Super Pursuit Mode!

(Also cool: people tend not to notice you brutally accelerating (compared to other fast cars) except for that guy in the Porsche you just smoked 😏.)

    • Amen to this! Ferrari V8’s, Porsche Flat-6’s, and Aston V12’s are all I need in life! And the whining of electric cars sound awesome
