What's the greatest racing game of all time?
In the world of driving games, there are two franchises that blow the rest of the competition out of the water: Gran Turismo, and Forza. For as long as these titles have been rivals, the old saying between addicts has always seemed to hold true: Forza is a racing game, while Gran Turismo is a racing simulator.
Having fervently played Gran Turismo for 12 years - playing for thousands of hours on 4, 5, & 6 - I can vouch for the astonishing realism GT offers. There really is nothing else out there that a consumer can buy that will replicate a car’s dynamics quite as accurately as Gran Turismo. But is realism the be all and end all?
Anyone who plays Forza will see that it certainly isn’t. While I am yet to try the Motorsport version of the Forza series that more closely rivals Gran Turismo, I have recently been playing the latest Forza Horizon 4 game. And I can confirm that in terms of having fun, it knocks Gran Turismo out of the park.
FH4 has given me a new perspective on what’s actually important in these little boxes of fantasy we call “games” - and that’s fun. While Gran Turismo is far from being bereft of fun entirely, it’s a much more serious experience - with the latest offering, Gran Turismo Sport, being the most serious of all of them.
The world of racing games is far broader than just these two series’. There’s Need For Speed, Dirt (for the rally fans), F1 games each year, and racing games for motorcycle lovers too. But beyond my own views, I want to know: what DO YOU think is the greatest racing game of all time? Let me know by voting below, and be sure to specify which version of each game is your favourite in the comments.
