What was in that album, among other things were pictures of my first car: 1977 Triumph TR7 FHC
1977 TR7 FHC
So this is where if first started. A two seater Britisth Sport Car, hated by most as not a true TR, as it was all British Leyland by then. But as a child of the 70's it's all about the wedge shape and pop up lights for me.
I bought this car in 1990 a month before my 16th Birthday, so I actually had it before I got my first motorbike. I paid £300 for it from money I'd saved from doing local gardening and odd jobs for neighbours. I was browsing the local paper (as that's how you found cars back then - before the internet! ) and was actually looking for a Dolomite to tinker with, as I thought that made a sensible first car, but when I saw this for the price I couldn't resist. It was just outside Bath so I got a mate to drive me over there and take a look. He had to do the test drive, as obviously at 15 I wasn't able to and it wasn't great but I had it anyway.
I spent the next 3 years "doing it up", which, with the help of a mate, included welding on new wings and front panel and an engine swap after finding out the head was warped on the original, and finally got it MOTed and drove it legally for the first time when I was 18.
I never got round to painting it though
Meanwhile at 16 since I needed transport and could yet drive. I got this, a DT50MX
Which I swaped the engine for one from an RD50, so slightly different gearing, had a big bore top end and fitted a YZ80 (off roads scrambler) carb. The carb mod meant no more oil pump so I had to change the throttle and premix two stroke in the tank. It returned about 25mpg! but had a top speed of 68mph! not bad for something that's supposed to restricted to 33mph max.
Quite possibly my biggest ever power increase from stock of any vehicle I've ever owned
Also whilst 16 and 17 before I had my driver license I took part in a couple of rounds of banger racing. First with this Mk2 Escort and later with a Chevette.
And that's where it all kicked off for me. So what's your story?
