Which 4 Liter 718 Should You Buy?

Porsche’s ‘Fuck It, 4 Liters for All’ campaign is leading to some extremely difficult decisions… Allow me to help.

Allow me to catch you up on the straight bonkers ‘Fuck It, 4 Liters for All’ campaign that has graced the Porsche 718 line-up… The once modest little pocket rocket that is Porsche’s current generation Cayman and Boxster has never seen its full potential until now. With the electric generation looming over this mid-engine mini monster, Porsche’s liquid fuel loving engineers seem be swinging themselves out of a corner. They’ll never win, but I appreciate that they’ve gone bare-knuckle batshit crazy.

The raw nature of the engine has been giving car enthusiasts boners since the 997 GT3 RS 4.0l.

Quick history: the 4.0l naturally aspirated flat 6 engine has always been Porsche’s hardest flex. Typically reserved for the ultimate iteration of each generation of 911, the raw nature of the engine has been giving car enthusiasts boners since the 997 GT3 RS 4.0l. The high-revving visceral experience is undeniably iconic but was always stuck in the ass end of the inconvenient and unlikely design of the 911. Unlike the slip-n-slide snappy death trappy 911, the Cayman is actually good (fuck you, fight me…). Smaller, lighter and mid-engine, the Cayman has spent its life in the shadow of its fat-assed big brother… until now.

The holy grail 4.0l naturally aspirated flat 6 engine has finally made its way to the Cayman/Boxster. At last, the 718 gets the ultimate Porsche hand-me-down in not one, but six different versions. But there-in lies the problem… too many options. So, allow me to help guide you in choosing which 4.0l 718 you should buy.

If you ever swung your cat by its tail when you were young… this one is for you. The French phrase L'appel du vide (the call of the void) describes that little voice in the back of your head that compulsively begs you to commit self-harm for no reason other than to quench some inexplicable curiosity. It is your body begging for chaos before your mind can advise you not to. That impulsive desire to jump off a building or kick a puppy just to see how far it would go. Most of us know better than to listen to that voice… but if you’re one of the few who don’t, this car is probably for you.

In the right hands, the GT4 RS will break 7 minutes on the Nürburgring and it will almost certainly make anyone with an overpriced, back-end heavy 911 GT3 RS at your local track jealous. Never has the 718 been more suited to those of you who are one bad day away from murdering your neighbors… If that’s you, put down the knife, step away from the puppy and order one now.

You’re the kind of person who would make eye-contact with the last guy on the bus and slowly scoot one seat further away. Sensible. You’ve had those thoughts too, sure. But you’d never actually follow through… Would you? No no, definitely not. But it took you two steps toward the puppy before you came to your senses.

The GT4 is a demon… A race car for the weekend warrior. “Perfectly Irrational,” Porsche calls it. Chances are this car is better than you are at driving, a chance to hang with the big boys at your local track and really immerse yourself in that dream of becoming a real race car driver that you let die when you got a grown-up job. Some nights you just start it up in your garage to hear that beautiful engine idle while you close your eyes, grip the steering wheel and wonder.

The less between you and that beautiful engine, the better. Congratulations, I’m jealous of your beach house in Malibu and your smokin’ hot girlfriend who you clearly do not mind showing to the world. With the top down and the wind blowing through what’s left of your hair, there’s never a bad moment to be seen in your 718 Spyder.

But it’s not all glitz and glam… Sometimes the back roads just aren’t enough to contain your driving fury. It’s time to slip on those driving gloves, raise that mini spoiler and head to the track because even though you can’t, boy that car can drive…

This one. You buy this one.

A reason to take the long way home. Drop the top, put your shades on and just take it in… Your car is plenty fast (and python green for some reason), but it’s not about that. The chassis is tight enough for the back country turns you found a few weeks ago but refuse to tell your friends about and the engine is probably the best ever put into a sub-super car.

Any classic Porsche lover deserves this car. It is what the air-cooled 911 was meant to grow up to be. Small, nimble and genuinely sporty. These cars are for enthusiasts, those who would rather be dancing through gears every Sunday than in church. Get this car while you can… And get it with three pedals because driving is fun and it’s meant to be engaging in a car like this.

I have absolutely no idea who buys this. But hey, it’s got gold wheels and that’s pretty neat.

  • It it were me with my own money it would have to be a Spyder. Not only do I think they look sublime but they also drive very nicely, from what I’ve heard.

    • They do look absolutely beautiful and they drive just as good as they look. The manual gearbox could be sportier, but then again it has no roof... So maybe you don't need a twitchy 2nd gear. That car is amazing.

  • After reading lots of articles about the 718 GTS 4.0, this is by far the richest and more qualitative one. The article is pragmatic but still elegant, funny and well written. Very rare these days.

    Well done.

By the way, I am waiting prices to go down to replace my Cayman 987 and Boxster 987 by a 718 Cayman GTS and Boxster 718 GTS.

I know…I have never been able to decide between Boxster and Cayman…

    • Ahh Thank you, Bob! Not sure how useful my advice actually is but I appreciate that a lot. Boxster or Cayman, you're getting an amazing car. If you're in the market for two, is recommend one with a stick. It's a long-legged gearbox but smooth...
