I am going to try and answer the question: What is Because Cars? Now, I’m aware that this is a question that nobody is asking, but I’d like to give those who are interested (if any) a bit of background about me. In case you hadn’t noticed, Because Cars is the name that I use to post with here on DriveTribe. The name I go by in real life is Blee, it’s a nickname I’ve had since I was very young, and I know it’s a strange one, but it’s what I go by. One of the reasons that I choose Because Cars to post under is because it matches my initials, which I think is kind of cool.

Anyway, what am I all about and how come I’ve suddenly started posting on the internet? Well, honestly and simply, it’s because I love cars. For as long as I can remember I’ve been obsessed with anything that’s got four wheels. As I grew up, all I wanted was to be able to drive, and luckily at 17 (I’m from the UK, by the way) I passed first time, this freedom only enhanced my love of vehicles. Since then, I’ve owned 5 cars. These have ranged from convertibles to saloons, and each one has taught me different lessons.

So, I passed at 17 and have been driving ever since. In that case, how has it taken me until 23 to start posting car related content? Surely, I should have just got on with it. Well, in truth, there are quite a lot of reasons, but I won’t go into them all. Firstly, I have Autism, and whilst I’m the first to admit that on the surface it’s hard to tell, it does express itself in the form of anxiety. A side effect of this is a lack of self-confidence, which when posting things like opinions online, is a bit of an issue. However, I’ve now reached a stage in my life where I feel as though I’m ready to tackle my self-doubt head on. Secondly, I was busy trying to have a full-time job. Like most of the population I was anxious to get myself a good career, so I got myself an apprenticeship. However, I soon realised that it wasn’t going to work. The thought of doing a job I didn’t enjoy for the rest of my life seriously scared me. Because of this, I quit my job an applied for university.

Having completed a foundation year, I am about to begin my first year studying magazine journalism, with the dream of becoming a car journalist firmly in sight. Not being content with my future being dictated purely by my grades, I decided that I would start posting my journey into the automotive world on social media. This quickly led me (with a nudge from JetPat) to the wonderful world of DriveTribe. Unsurprisingly, it turns out that, a website housing a huge automotive community, where anybody can post, was the perfect platform for me.

What has been a surprise, is how well my posts have been received. Now, my opinion on online communities may be somewhat tainted from my time on Xbox live, but the Drive Tribe community seems great. The fact that my posts seem to do quite well is just a bonus! Looking forward and with the resumption of university imminent, I hope to keep up the momentum and upload regularly here. I’m also determined to get myself into gear and start creating videos, I seem to of struggled with this so far. This is partly down to self-confidence, but it’s also laziness on part. Editing is a skill I don’t have, so I need to invest some serious time into it. Depending on how this post fairs, I’ll post again in a few weeks to update you on my progress, but for the time being be sure to check out my profile and check out my previous posts to see what I’ve been up.

  • When we’ve got time, Blee, you can try to work out what 16 cars I’ve had since I started driving ... I started with a C reg soft top Triumph Herald. That’s C reg as in 1965.
