With Ferrari dropping like stone in 2020 and Alexander Albon performing poorly this season, a rare chance has opened up for a mid-field driver to claim fourth place in the driver’s championship and the bragging rights that go along with it.

There are currently 8 drivers who are within 27 points of each other. In a normal season you would usually have only three or four drivers fighting it out for the title of the best of the rest. However, because of the crazy season we have had so far, there are many prizes up for grabs. And it can be seen in the drivers standing as seven out of the eight drivers fighting for fourth place in the championship, have scored a podium so far in the season. The drivers in contention for fourth place in the championship are: Daniel Riccardo, Sergio Perez, Lando Norris, Alexander Albon, Charles Leclerc, Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz Jr. These drivers have been selected as they have consistently shown their prowess in the mid-field and some such as Charles Leclerc, have outperformed their machinery when compared to their team mates.

Let’s look at the three who are currently best of the rest:

Daniel Riccardo at the Eifel GP.

Daniel Riccardo at the Eifel GP.

Daniel Riccardo currently holds 4 fourth place in the drivers’ championship inheriting it from Lando Norris at the previous round at the Eifel GP. Riccardo’s form of late has been spectacular with spell of top six finishes starting from the round in Belgium. All his brilliant form had culminated in the third place finish at the Eifel GP, Renault’s first podium since returning to the sport in 2016. What’s more impressive is that out of the 5 races since Belgium, you can say that Riccardo has fought for a podium in three out of the five races.

Sergio Perez at the Eifel GP.

Sergio Perez has bounced back quietly from his positive test with Corona virus and has come alive in the past 2 races. Perez took back to back fourth place finishes in the last two rounds and was even in contention to fight for the last place on the podium in the Eifel GP. Other than Lewis Hamilton, Perez is the only driver to score points in every race he has entered this season. This consistency has propelled him to fifth place in the drivers’ championship, only 10 back from Riccardo.

Lando Norris at the Eifel GP.

Lando Norris started the season off with an inspiring third place in the Austrian GP with a blistering last lap to set the fastest lap and be within 5 seconds of Lewis Hamilton to take the podium off his fellow Brit. Since then he has always been fighting for the top honours and was even in contention for a podium in the jaw dropping Italian GP and the Eifel GP before his retirement.

Sebastian Vettel at the Eifel GP.

The drivers who missed the out are Estaban Ocon and Sebastian Vettel. These driver’s missed out as they haven’t shown enough progress throughout the season and are too far behind the rest with 6 races to go.
