Who Will Win the Extreme E Championship?

The season finale takes place in Dorset this weekend.

The season finale of the inaugural Extreme E season will take place down in the South of England in Dorset this weekend and after a long, arduous and extreme season, the Championship is still very much up for grabs!

“Our Dorset race is shaping up to be a thrilling finale and I can’t wait to see the teams battling it out on the course for victory at the concluding race of our first season."

Alejandro Agag

After four rounds in Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Greenland and Sardinia respectively, the Championship standings look like this:

1st - Rosberg X Racing - 129 Points

2. X44 - 113 Points

3. Andretti United - 93 Points

4. JBXE - 92 Points

5. ABT Cupra - 83 Points

The final race of the season will take place at the British Ministry of Defence Base at Bovington in Dorset, with the course again providing a completely new set of challenges for all of the drivers. A mixed surface of clay, sand, gravel, and mud dominates the course in Dorset making grip, or the lack of it, a key feature for the first time this season. The high chance of rain will also keep things spicy across the weekend.

A fast downhill start will allow for multiple cars to race side by side, but the wide-open space soon becomes a bottleneck and narrows down to single car width along the tree-lined course, bringing the drivers towards the course’s most striking feature - the 5.4-metre-high 23-degree ‘Knife Edge’ slope.

Extreme E’s decision to race in Dorset also marks a poignant shift from the Championship’s mission to race in remote, far-away places to highlight the effects of climate change. This is because the climate issues being discussed are starting to occur closer to home in the UK.

The legacy project itself that will take place in Dorset centres around beavers and their importance as nature's water engineers. In 2022, The National Trust, with the support of Extreme E, hope to reintroduce three pairs of free-living beavers to Purbeck, Dorset, from Scotland for the first time in over 400 years.

Once introduced, they'll open hundreds of hectares of wetlands that have been in ecological decline for decades, restoring freshwater fen and pool habitats for the local wildlife. Then, the beavers will spread beyond Studland and their benefits will hopefully spread with them as they will improve water quality and carbon storage while reducing flood risk.

Furthermore, Extreme E will be working alongside the National Trust to install protective measures to ensure the beavers don’t negatively impact local people and businesses and carry out engagement programmes to educate the public.

  • It's going to be a good finale but I suspect Rosberg might just beat Hamilton (again) - would like to see JBXE and Veloce improve their fortunes though. Think this has been a great first season and all involved should be congratulated, I think 2022 with Mclaren coming in (as well as Kimi/Kimiläinen, hopefully) will be brilliant

    • Gonna be a challenge for X44 but you never know. JBXE have been doing well and it'd definitely be nice to see Veloce do well. Kimi and Emma would be a great team combination. 🙌
