The Nurburgring is a track that holds a near-legendary status amongst petrolheads the world over. Dubbed the 'Green Hell' by F1 legend Jackie Stewart, this astonishing 12.9-mile leviathan of a racetrack continues to attract drivers from the world over.

Public driving sessions are open to anyone with a valid driving license and 30 euros to spend. But what many people don't know is that normal German road regulations apply while driving on the track, with some sections speed limited and overtaking on the right strictly forbidden.

The Nurburgring being, well, all very Nurburgring like means some drivers have a habit of running out of one vital element - which is, of course, skill. When this happens, everything quickly goes to shit for the driver concerned, resulting in an impact with another car or a barrier.

But what you may not be aware of is the high cost when your day at the Ring implodes. As if you lightly scrap five metres of single height armco, you will be on the hook for a minimum of 150 Euros. For this starting price, some men will come out in a truck to inspect the damage, before then adding 31 Euros to your bill for every additional metre of armco you've ruined.

As your car will be very broken after an impact as well, you will have to be recovered for a starting cost of 600 Euros. Adding a safety car to the mix as you'd expect is also reassuringly expensive at 82 Euros for every thirty minutes you need it.

The highest cost though is if you happen to ruin everyone else's day by closing the Nurburgring entirely. This will cost you 1,350 Euros per hour, which is not that bad compared to how much everyone will hate you.

Here is a full list of the potential cost of damaging and or closing the Nurburgring:

Base fee for attendance of armco truck – €150

Removing damaged armco – €10/metre (x2 or x3 or x4 for multiple-height sections)

Replacement armco – €31/metre (x2 or x3 for double/triple height)

Removing damaged armco posts – €5.10 each

Replacing armco post – €39 each

Safety car attendance – €82 per 30 mins (car and two people)

Circuit closure from – €1,350 per hour

Recovery truck from – €600 (inc VAT)

So remember, if you are going to tackle the Nurburgring, don’t bin it trying to be a track hero as it could cost you dearly.

  • That's why you should always get track insurance before going on there. The best solution is renting a track car with insurance. That way if you crash you won't have to start a new life in Argentina to avoid paying huge bill for track repair, towing and your car repair.

  • Wrote my car off at the ring, after fighting with my insurance company for 13 months they finally decided to pay. They ended up paying for the value of the car and the bill from the ring.

  • Also if you are driving your daily car while doing this, and I have seen many videos of people doing just that, add in having to explain to your significant other how you wrecked the family car, then to the insurance adjuster how you intentionally took the family Grocery Getter onto a race track and then spun it into a wall, where he'll laugh you, your claim, and your coverage right out of the building. This is why I'll repeat myself yet again, if you take your daily driver onto a track day anywhere, you are an IDIOT! Because one day, sooner that you expect, you or some other driver will put it into a wall.

    If you want to do track days like this, GET A SECOND HAND DEDICATED CAR for just this activity. Decent inexpensive second hand cars are easy to get these days, keep the minimum liability insurance on it so its road legal, and over time you can fix it up and add performance to it, and end up with a decent dedicated street legal track day car that can also be used when your daily driver needs servicing. If you say I can't afford a second dedicated car, consider what will happen the day you put your precious daily driver into a barrier, because odds are it will happen eventually. Any car you take onto a track should for all intents and purposes be considered expendable, because if you crash it, or someone crashed into you, you may very well have to right it off. Someone once told me this regarding RC airplanes, but its 100% applicable to all motor sports.
