Why have Top Gear lied about the Taycan Vs Tesla drag race?
Top Gear recently released a video featuring both the new Porsche Taycan Turbo S and the latest edition of the Model S - the Performance 'Raven'. The video consisted mainly of a drag race between the cars, in which the Porsche won but a closer look into the results has upset a few people who think that Top Gear may have failed to use the full power of the Tesla.
The main issue that has been brought up is that in this particular video, the Tesla only managed to run an 11.08 @124mph in the 1/4 mile which is considerably slower than other runs before, even before the new Performance came out. A closer look at the video shows little movement from the body when launching, suggesting that it wasn't set in the Launch Mode which allows maximum performance meaning a faster 1/4 mile time than what has been recorded here. Numerous tests have been made previously all over the internet with the P100D claiming a 1/4 time of 11 seconds while NOT using the Launch Control function.
The video Vbox results also show a 0-60 time of 2.6 seconds while real life owners have managed to consistently get it down to 2.4 seconds without too much of an issue. Maybe the car wasn't charged enough? Nope, Top Gear claimed a charge of over 80% so a lower output isn't the problem.
Throughout the drag race there is minimal footage of inside the Tesla which is fair enough as the video is more focused towards the Taycan but the Tesla is clearly not in the full Ludicrous mode - why would you drag race a car while not using all of the power? That's a bit dodgy. When you hold down the Ludicrous button it will bring up on the screen a video of you travelling in space which then enables the full power of the car. Once that is done, the entire interface changes into a grey screen showing all sorts of power and performance data which clearly isn't on in the drag race while the interior is briefly shown during the race.
So it appears that Top Gear failed to have the car using full power and launch control meaning a completely biased race in favor of the Porsche. I'm by no means a massive Tesla fan boy but there's no denying that this race is inaccurate.
