WHY I DON'T LIKE THE PORSCHE PANAMERA

ANOTHER UNPOPULAR OPINION

On my last article about Dad estate cars I got an awful lot of comments and messages asking why I didn’t include the Porsche Panamera in the list of the best estate cars.

Well as I explained to many many people I’m not the biggest fan of the Porsche Panamera. At all. In fact, I don’t like it at all, and here’s why…

The Porsche Panamera was realised in late 2009 and was classed as a ‘Four Door Supercar’, apart from the fact that it is not a Supercar. A Sports car yes, but no way is it a Supercar

to me the panamera is like an english breakfast

Looks

As far as I’m concerned, the Panamera’s looks have never been there. At all. The Panamera is by no means a good-looking car, it’s come a long way since it was launched almost 10 years ago back in late 2009. The 2018 Panamera looks a million times better than the 2009 version.

A hideous 2012 Panamera

As Top Gear said, “the Porsche looks like its just been found at the bottom of a lake after 2 weeks, and the Maserati is the man who threw him there”.

The 2018 Panamera is an ok looking car. I say that loosely. I think that Porsche should stick to designing Supercars, Sports cars and Hyper cars.

what Porsche should stick to designing and making

what Porsche should stick to designing and making

Many years ago, Porsche designed a prototype 4 door supercar called the 989. I think we can all agree it was for the best that they didn’t put it into production.

Space

The Panamera is a long car, and weirdly shaped. That means if you choose the saloon boot space is compromised. The story is exactly the same with the Vauxhall Vectra hatchback, the Mercedes CLSs, the Audi A6 saloon. Due to the weird back shape the boot space is made smaller. Especially as the Panamera is not a tall car.

Because of the high boot lip, getting stuff in and out of the car is made harder especially if they are heavy. The load lip is very likely to get scratched and damaged as things will be pushed and balanced on there.

The Panamera has a long boot, not a high boot which is good if you have ski’s or Golf clubs, but bad if you plan on taking the family on vacation. You can’t stack up items like you can in a normal car.

Noise

One of the biggest issues with the Panamera is that there is no noise. Porsche first introduced the Panamera with a 4.8L Twin-Turbo V8 developing 500 Horsepower. And there was not a peep from the engine.

Massive Engine. No Noise

Massive Engine. No Noise

For me this is a big issue with Porsche. Porsche go on about how amazing and sport and super their cars are, but they make no noise. A Supercar isn’t a Supercar unless it makes a noise so loud it shatters nearby windows.

Even in a tunnel that Porsche V8 does nothing. In terms you’d get more noise out of a Diesel Skoda. It’s disappointing. The Panamera was let down by its styling, then it didn’t even have a Supercar noise to help it.

A lot of people like the Panamera and that’s fine. I don’t have a problem with that. But I don’t like it. I will happily admit that it is a fast car, because it is. But, to me styling matters a lot. A big reason why people buy cars is because they look good.

Good looking scenery. Bad looking car

Good looking scenery. Bad looking car

The Panamera doesn’t deserve to be classed as a supercar to me. It doesn’t create that Supercar sense of occasion and to me that is one of the essential ingredients for a Supercar. Supercars MUST create a sense of occasion the Panamera just doesn’t.

To me the Panamera is like a traditional English Breakfast, it has the Bacon, it has the Beans, it has the Sausages and it has the Toast but its missing one of the main ingredients, The Egg, and without the Egg it isn’t a true FULL English Breakfast, and without the Noise the Panamera isn’t a TRUE Supercar. One of the most vital ingredients in a Supercar is the noise, and that’s missing from the Panamera. Without the noise it’s not complete. Its not a Supercar.

No Eggs - not a proper Full English. No Noise - not a Supercar

No Eggs - not a proper Full English. No Noise - not a Supercar

Any car can be fast, but it has to create a sense of occasion to be a Supercar.

And that’s why I don’t like the Porsche Panamera. ..

and don't even get me started on the Mansory Panamera.

  • You mentioned the noise is an issue for the panamera. Try the old gts models. They are insanely loud with that 4.8l na v8. The newer panamera 4, with a v6 turbo makes all kind of noises you'd expect from a car at this price range. Same goes for the v8 turbo and turbo s. Wich is a slightly detuned version of the 4l v8 found the the current rs6 models. But then again the turbo s is a hybrid with an extra 130 hp making it 680hp in total. Supercar territory if you'd ask me. But then again. Gt car

  • The panamera isnt a supercar in any way. Its a gt car. The st is quite spacious they raised the roof slightly and actually lowered the floor for easy acces. I do 100% agree with you that the first model is just horrific to look at but the current model to me is optic wise very appealing. Its the perfect package for when you are on the road often. Comfortable and a f*cking rocketship if you have the right engine.

  • I actually own a 2010 Porsche Panamera Turbo. The car is not loud only during normal driving but it does get a bit louder when you floor it. This is because the mufflers are valve actuated by boost pressure. This keeps it quiet when you are in luxury mode. This makes the Panamera only get loud depending on boost pressure. You can actually reach under the car and pull the valve on the muffler by hand to make a bit louder full time. The other reason is because it's not designed to be a pure sports car. It's actually classified as a sports/luxury car. Luxury super cars tend not to be loud during normal driving. But your opinion that its ugly is not shared by the majority of people I have spoken to. I get more compliments on this car than ever even after 10 years. It don't stop. My son use to write down every compliment when I first purchased it. He ran out of paper font and back then he just got burnt out on it. It was too much.. Most people consider the Panamera more of a Specialty Car or Prestige Car while some do call it a Super car but either way, one things for sure, it more than a sports car and more than a luxury car, then to me, that qualifies as a Super car. Plus you have to consider retail value. You won't find any super cars for 30k but once you get into 150k territory you are definitely the beginnings of Super car territory.
