This will definitely trigger some people...

SUV, noun: Sport Utility Vehicle

A sport utility vehicle or SUV is a car classification that combines elements of road-going passenger cars with features from off-road vehicles, such as raised ground clearance and four-wheel drive. There is no commonly agreed-upon definition of an SUV, and usage of the term varies between countries. But as car enthusiasts, we all can agree that they are much bigger and slower than other types of cars on the road. Or are they...

Hate

SUV's get a lot of hate but do they really deserve it? This is what Throttle Girl had to say about SUV's, "It's nothing deep but it's not my type of car, they don't interest me nor wow me. I'm more into two seaters, I think they are designed better and flow much better. Although, SUV's are much more practical and useful, I like things that are much more exotic and emotional. SUV's in my opinion though are useful and great, but in my preference they just don't interest me." I think that Throttle did a great job explaining why she doesn't like SUV's so that I can break it down.

Wow factor

If you've ever driven an SUV you'd probably say that it is slow and sluggish. Well that is true to some extent. Although most SUV’s are slow there are a few such as the Lamborghini Urus and the Aston Martin DBX that are actually faster than most cars! With top speeds nearing 200 mph that’s not far from the supercar range such as the Aventador.

Even these powerful SUV's sound amazing:

Design

Some SUV’s are beautiful such as the old Ford Bronco and Chevy Blazer that look like they can be driven into a mountain and then drive home just fine. These SUV’s are designed to off-road and explore and not be limited to the roads like many exotic cars. If the bold rugged look isn’t for you there are many beautiful SUV’s such as I mentioned before the Lamborghini Urus and the not so expensive Mazda CX-9. Although there are some hideous SUV’s that make your eyes bleed such as the Hyundai Kona and Palisade, not all SUV’s should be judged based on some ugly apples.

The beautiful ones:

The eye bleader ones:

Pacticality:

One of the main points in the SUV is the utility or practicality of it. Let’s be honest your exotic car can’t nearly hold as much as my Honda Pilot can. One of the main selling points of SUV’s is that it can hold a lot of stuff. Considering that I’m a sailor and a frequent traveler my family needs an SUV. In fact, we have three! Whenever we go on vacation, we completely fill up the cargo space in our SUVs. We could never fit all that stuff in an exotic car heck it won’t even fit in a wagon! Well what about a truck? Pickup trucks are amazing and all and can hold more stuff than SUV’s but there is one drawback, they’re susceptible to the elements. Living in Florida during the summer we usually have a thunderstorm a day and if we’re lucky five! So when traveling far distances like for instance vacation you need your stuff protected from the wild Florida weather.

But wait theres more!

SUV's also ride much higher than any other car aside from trucks. This is great for visibility. I've driven sedans, coupes, trucks, and SUV’s and trucks and SUV’s are the only ones that I can actually see out of. Also, another thing is that I’m really tall 6’1” in fact. This means that I have a hard time getting in and out of smaller cars. I’ve had trouble with BMW’s, a Mazda 6, a Ferrari F12, and an NSX all of which were a pain for a tall guy like me to get out of. Another thing that I have yet to mention is crash safety. Due to the better visibility from SUV’s and that they are bigger than small cars they fair pretty well in crashes and protect their occupants better than smaller cars. This means that SUV’s are great for wanting to protect the kids (when you have them of course). And speaking of family, my Honda Pilot can easily sit up to eight people and still have storage room!

Final remarks

Overall, SUV’s are great cars and don’t deserve the hate that they get. They are great for everyday life especially if you have a family. Before you hate an SUV look on the bright side, see what all it can do. It may not be fast but they can haul that’s for sure! And please for the love of God please hate on crossovers that are 40% plastic and not SUV’s! :)

Thanks for reading! Please tell me what you think of SUV's in the comments! :)

  • I agree. SUVs are incredible and the best choices for many people and families around the world. You have to be an idiot to hate them

  • I have nothing against SUVs tbh. I just don't like the fact that some of them are ugly and use legendary names. Otherwise, I love the new Armada, Urus, Levante, Stelvio etc.

    • Ya I agree 100% with you! It’s a disgrace to to that to legends. But you got to ignore the dumb things like that and see the good SUVs and things that they are capable of

  • Here's what you're missing:

    - The high centre-of-mass makes them prone to rollovers in an accident

    - Despite what you're saying, the Wagon has nearly the same amount of storage. In fact, the E-class wagon has more space then the G-wagen.

    - While there are some good looking SUVs (like the DBX and the others you mentioned), there are far more ugly ones than pretty ones. The same can't be said for say, a sports coupe.

    - Manual transmission? Only 5 SUVs/CUVs currently on sale in the States offer them.

So while I'm not saying that you're wrong, (and of course you're entitled to your own opinion), I'm saying that there are better options out there for people who need the space.

    • Thanks it took me a while to write (mainly me wanting to throw my laptop out the window). Suvs definitely get a lot of hate that they don’t deserve

  • I only like true SUVs like the Wrangler, the Bronco and the Jimny, the rest don't really have a purpose, I don't like performance SUVs because they sit too high and have massive amounts of body roll in the corners so they are useless on the track, and they generally have independent suspension so they are useless offroad
