- The Gemera, in all it's Swedish glory.

Why is the Koenigsegg Gemera so special?

I'll be covering all there is to know about this 3-cylinder, 4-seater beast.

Koenigsegg, that Swedish company with the name practically no one can pronounce, has released some very nice hypercars and broken many records.

Among these beasts is the Gemera, the world's first 4-seater hypercar and Koenigsegg's first for four.

But what makes it so special?

I'm glad you asked.

Looking at the front, we see the headlights resemble the very first Koenigsegg; the Koenigsegg CC Prototype.

Now, I want you to look at the side of every Koenigsegg model and spot the design cues.

Go on, take your time.

That's right, the sides are full of design cues.

But, if you look at the Gemera, you see the helmet-like top extended from just over the front fender all the way to the gorgeous ducktail at the rear.

There's no rearview mirrors, as those are replaced with cameras, and top-mounted exhausts leave people in shock and awe at the sounds.

Yes, there's air vents incorporated into the headlights.

The Gemera was made to honor Koenigsegg's achievements, and it does that very well. It breaks records, too; the fastest 4 seater hypercar, the first 4-seater with a 1:1 power/weight ratio, the first hypercar with 3 cylinders, and many more.

But, what about the engine?

Now we're talking.

Out of all the engines Christian could use, he chose a 3-cylinder one.

And then made it produce upwards of 1,700 horsepower. 1.700 hp from a tiny little motorbike engine with 3 e-motors. In fact, its nickname is TFG, or The Friendly Giant.

Add to that the trans from the Regera, and you'd expect a high top speed. And you'd be right, as it accelerates from 0-60 in 1.9 seconds, topping at 250 mph. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Yep, same speed and acceleration stats as the Tesla Roadster 2.0, the one that Elon Musk says can fly. Smh...

Oh, and did I mention it can go fully electric? Yep, it's got 31 miles of range thanks to a 800V battery.

Information about the engine is from Koenigsegg's website:

'The Freevalve system in the TFG offers the unique ability to have independent control of the intake and exhaust valves. For any engine load criteria, the timing of intake and exhaust can be independently adjusted. The system can then “decide” how to operate the valves depending on driving conditions – which combination to use in order to maximize performance, minimize fuel consumption or regulate emissions. Freevalves allows for a greater degree of control over the engine, which in turn provides significant performance and environmental benefits.'

If I could put this in a motorbike, I probably would.

The interior?

Makes you drool, doesn't it?

Makes you drool, doesn't it?

Four seats, eight cupholders. No need to recline the seats forward to get out, as there's only 2 doors instead of four. (presumably because 4 dihedral synchro-helix doors would cost too much to make and would be too hard to design)

The Koenigsegg Automated Twisted Synchrohelix Actuation Doors (or KATSAD) open easily without the obstruction of B-pillars, allowing effortless access even when parked in a limited surrounding space.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again: Koenigsegg makes the best doors.

And that's why I love this car. It's a gorgeous callback to the legendary CC Prototype, the car that started Koenigsegg's reign over the hypercar community.

Tschüss! (Bye in German)

  • After that article about H engines, this must be the lamest 2nd. Everything we need to know about it, but not explaining the most interesting feature of it, the engine and gearbox. If you had copy pasted wikipedia, it would have been better.

  • These are to this day my favorite cars.

  • Please explain how a hypercar with 3 cylinders can pump out the 1000+ HP necessary for a car like this. Is it turbos, superchargers or a hybrid with big motors? And how do you pronounce the name? Thanks.

    • I can't really explain how the Gemera puts out over 1,500 hp from 3 cylinders and a couple e-motors, since that's the magic of Koenigsegg. And I think it's pronounced 'Gi-meer-a'

    • Thanks Ethan. I really meant how do you pronounce Koenigsegg?

  • I still don’t know why this car is special. What a useless article. It said “cover everything there is to know” ... really??

  • Manufacturers always used to lies (a little bit) when a new product arrives on the market. That’s why you don’t have to believe in all they « com »( it’s part of the marketing of a new product). Remember SSC with the speed record...

    • *so in this case, as others drivers said, i’m asking myself too how a 3 cylinders motor (with EV motor) can get 1500hp..?? overall when you know that Koenigsegg is not a EV specialist
