First Reason
They referenced to Toyota's Popular Supercar in the 1960's. The 2000GT. A rare collectable Toyota which was founded in a James Bond Movie

Second Reason
They also referenced the Sprinter Trueno/Levin AE86 for the name. One of the most overrated, but slow hatchback which appeared in the manga series "Initial D". It was nicknamed "Hachi-Roku" which means "Eighty-Six"

They added a Boxer Engine because they referenced to the Sports 800. Known for Toyota's first sports car, which had a boxer engine.
