Why Silverstone & F1 Have Made A Big Mistake

I love F1, I wouldn’t be writing about it if I didn’t. I also love Silverstone, I’ve already been twice this year, it feels like a spiritual home for British petrol heads. They always put on a great show and really look after the fans… until this year.

The news story broke over the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend that Silverstone were looking at moving some track action to the Thursday, specifically GP3 & F2 practice sessions to allow them to have an easier time fitting everything else in over the weekend. At first thought, a 4 day racing weekend sounds like a great plan, but really it seems like a very big error.

Should you really change the schedule to such an event with less than 3 weeks notice?

What about everyone who’s booked the weekend off? Most will travel on that Thursday.. Those that have booked hotels starting on the Thursday night will have to bring all their luggage to the circuit? (A lot worse for those travelling on the already ropey public transport to Silverstone.)

Liberty Media have bought some fantastic changes to F1 events, and this could be a great idea if planned enough in advance. If they sat down and decided that all F1 events where possible would be 4 day events next year then everyone could plan in advance for a fantastic 4 day festival of Motorsport.

On this occasion its alienating those fans that have made their plans in advance, robbing them of some of the track action they paid to see. For others its an excuse to squeeze a few extra pounds out of people who have already shelled out enough.

Silverstone, FOM, Liberty media.. take note. A lot of people aren’t happy.
