Why wasn't I impressed by the Cybertruck and F-150 tug of war clip?

Total dominance, or total mismatch?

It was the clip everyone watched today, but rather than impressing me, I've got more questions for Elon.

Everyone and their uncle suddenly earned their PhD in physics today, apparently, and were throwing down excuses faster than new Tesla customers throwing down $100 deposits. My real question is: why? Why didn't Tesla try to make this look like a fair fight? Why did they pick a tug of war game instead of towing something heavy, a SpaceX rocket perhaps, down a drag strip with a Ford F-150 in the opposite lane?

Of course the Cybertruck was going to tow the F-150 away like a toy, I expected to see that. I didn't expect to see the F-150's front tires spinning in the opposite direction. Was this only a 4x2 truck? There's no mention of what's under the hood of this Ford either. No details on how many miles were on its tires, how many pulls they did, just a quick 16 second clip that has now been watched over 11.3 million times, by the time I click the publish button. Why give the doubters an excuse to doubt?

What do you think? Should Tesla have made this a fair fight to begin with? Does the Ford even stand a chance?

  • Lame marketing stunt in my opinion. Kinda like when they showed an electric ford f150 towing a damn train car. Also a stunt.

  • This is hucksterism at it's finest. Car dealers all over the country have been pulling this same stunt for years. The key is to get the the "losing" vehicle to break traction. At that point it's game over, and they could have probably towed the F-150 with a garden tractor. And as has been mentioned elsewhere, the cybertruck is quite a bit heavier than the Ford.

  • From what I know about F-150s, that’s a 4x2 STX 2.7 EcoBoost. That’s far from the best F-150 for towing.

    • They definitely should have went with the 3.5 or 5.0 V8, and 4x4 should have been the minimum requirement

  • Its really hard to tell on the video at least for me if the F150 is still spinning on the opposite direction while being drag. They should have installed a interior camera showing the rpm of both trucks so we know that the Ford is not just in neutral.

  • Cool stunt but completely useless car here, as its made of reasonably thick stainless steel its gonna be so heavy its either concidered a small lorry or if its less than 3500kg its gonna have so little carrying capacity its useless. By the time you go for the required small lorry license you might aswell spend the little bit extra and go for the full lorry license and get an actual small ish lorry to tow a much much larger trailer

    • Exactly! I knew it was going to tow the f150 with ease, they should have made it a little bit closer if they wanted to impress
