Why you need to care about the Civic Type R -- WATCH THIS

So, if you are like me and many others, you would probably pass the new Civic Type R by because of it's looks. Even those that like the looks usually agree this is the cars most divisive point. But once you get past that, there is so much more.

Most of this cars’, should we call them, attachments are functional and serve a purpose. An eclectic view of form following function. Well what about massive wing on the back? I'll answer the question with another question... if your Civic can do 170mph/ 274kmh would you want some wing?

Then comes to what shouldn't be a bold choice, but is nowadays, a 6-speed manual. This odd device most have forgotten is sadly going the way of the headphone jack on cellular phones, dying a sad slow death. For those of us who subscribe to the " LONG LIVE THE MANUAL" motto, this is a point of huge celebration. Precious tenths of a second discarded for driving pleasure. Excellent choice.

The sound of that engine is note worthy. Ha, get it note, like engine note?!? I don't care if that was horrible I think it was punny. The rushing whoosh of the induction noise as the throttle builds followed by the burbles and pops of the 306hp turbod inline 4 engine. Which also has 295lb ft. of torque. Definitely enough for spirited driving and some track days. Enough to take the respectably weighted 3111 lb. Type R to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. That's the same as the 2014 Audi S3 Sportback 2.0T Quattro.

Oh, and they did some engineering voodoo to virtually eliminate torque steer... in a front-wheel drive sports car. Mind blown.

  • Great to see you write up something. I am all for saving the manual. Maybe Jethro Bovingdon will come back to DT soon.

  • No constructive criticism - it was very good. I want more.

Look, I agree we need this car. Good on Honda for making something affordable and very sporty, and all that, but I'd rather have an MX-5.

I have a lot of respect for Honda the more I learn about this car. It beat a Camaro SS and wasn't...
