Why you shouldn’t buy a luxurious electric car just yet

Sure, they may seem cool at the moment, but they're going to be outdated pretty darn soon

The idea of going out and spending upwards of £100,000 on a luxurious family EV is absolutely baffling to me. Not because it is a battery electric vehicle because I think they're great but simply because it's about to become worthless.

"It's like buying a laptop in 1992. It's going to be obsolete within an hour."

Something Chris Harris once said that's stuck with me is this: "It's like buying a laptop in 1992. It's going to be obsolete within an hour."

What Chris says is absolutely true and I wholeheartedly agree with it. I feel that anyone laying down six figures for a premium German EV at the moment is just crazy. There is always going to be something better coming along, sure there is, but now is not the time to be getting these because of his quickly everything is developing at the moment.

I think more people should be looking towards the more affordable options such as the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and so on. While they may not be attainable for everyone, they make much more sense to buy now than something worth upwards of four times the value.

Let's say you went out to buy a Porsche Taycan Turbo S or Audi e-tron GT today. It would be outdated before you could say 'Elon Musk sold some Tesla stock' – it's really quite frightening. If you really want a BEV family car then you should really be looking at either the cheaper alternatives out there (new or old) or just buy a second hand Range Rover or Skoda, because quite frankly, you will regret your option within a week when a new and improved one is launched.

A shocking example of this is the new Mercedes EQC. Firstly, not many people bought them in the first place, but those who did couldn't drive anywhere because the car would drain its battery in no time. By that point, someone in a much cheaper and much better Skoda will pass you. No one wants that, do they?

Do you agree?

  • I'd say you shouldn't buy an electric car full stop. It'll help put an end to this madness.

  • Don't worry, I had no intentions to buy any kind of electric car ever, I like the sound of a motor and being able to add more power in my garage over the weekend.

    • I don’t know if I agree with that- if an electric vehicle is convenient now it has good chance of being convenient for its lifespan. Once I find a car that suits me of any kind, having a newer model doesn’t change my opinion of the older one. If it...
