- The all new GLE SUV

Will the new GLE SUV convince you out of your coupé?

It even massages your behind!

There are so many things to think about when purchasing a car. And at some point, ‘practicality’ may play a big part in your search criteria. Whether it’s for towing capacity, child capacity or storage capacity you may need to scrap your sporty hot coupé/hatch back and opt for a roomier ride.

The thought of having to give up my Audi TT for a ‘family friendly’ option in the trés distant future still makes me eek, so it’s nice to know there are some decent options available (aside from the standard Rangey situation).

The model I tested out recently was the brand new Mercedez-Benz GLE SUV from Mercedes-Benz Geelong. This model is the base 300d variant (as other models haven’t hit Australian shores just yet) however the model I got my hands on came with loads of upgrades which made it one of the most comfortable SUV’s I’ve ever been in - who doesn’t enjoy a massaging, heating/cooling, supportive drivers chair?!

Check out all the finer details in my video below, plus my nan’s cute cameo at the end 😉

  • compromise hardly ever works in cars. These vehicles aren't very good in the corners and they're definitely not very good on rough terrain either. I'm the biggest Mercedes fan out there but I'm not convinced with any of their SUVs lately :/

    • I take your point Alessandro but I think it's also how you look at it. You wouldn't buy one of these in place of a LandCruiser/proper 4WD and although I talk about it replacing my coupe, it's not a race track situation either. For me it's a luxury...

    • Jessica, I think Mark may mean better thanks the Quasimodo esque Mercedes SUV coupes.

If you’ve got a “proper” Merc coupe, ie C series, S class etc, I don’t think anyone would complain.

While Mercedes make some stunning cars, those SUV...

  • Thank you. Good review and very comprehensive. I noticed on your shot of the gear selector that they still use a hard plastic for the gear paddles, and the for the life of me I can't figure out why. It's a silly and very visible bit of cost cutting. For reference, my 2016 X3 has brushed aluminum paddle shifters.

For a $100K I think that level of cost cutting is not acceptable.

Still, good looking car with other good features, such as visible seat controls. Thank you for the review.

    • Thanks Stuart, and yes I agree they could have upped the quality of those. There’s always something isn’t there!
