As the temperature is dropping below 5 degrees centigrade, it is time to switch to winter tires here in Sweden; at about 5 degrees the rubber of the summer tires gets to stiff for proper grip. Given my laziness, having kept running on R-class race tires instead of switching to normal street tires, it was all the more time to get the softer winter tires on.
Having run another season in the Swedish Time Attack series, I also had to replace the brake pads. The race pads have more iron in them, which aids heat dissipation, but corrodes badly. A year back I lost a perfectly good set of pads to the corrosive effects of winter salt on the roads. (Here in Sweden they fight the ice on the roads with salt. Do they do that around the world?)
Replacing the racing brake pads with another set, less prone to rust. The back of the race pads have discoloured due to the extreme heat, but I assure you they are good for another season.
Fortunately it is an easy job to replace the brake pads on this car. You just need to bring the right tools and then you can slip them into the calipers. Then put the winter wheel on, let the car down on the ground, tighten to specified torque, and repeat. As always, remember to hydrate. As you loose fluid, the blood gets thicker and don't feed the muscles and brain the oxygen they need; you get tired, clumsy and dumb.
Then check the tire pressure and adjust accordingly. The TPMS need to recalibrate, but I'll do that the next time I ride. Now we are ready for winter.
