At the 1988 Birmingham Motor Show, the Jaguar has presented a prototype of a super sports car, and in 1991 at the Tokyo Motor Show was shown to the public under the name XJ220. Such name machine obligated due to incredible, at the time, the maximum speed - 352 km / h.
Production XJ220 jointly engaged by Jaguar Sports and TWR. The prototype has 12-cylinder engine, but the XJ220, presented in Tokyo, was equipped with a 6-cylinder 3.5-liter from XJR11 racing.
The chassis is a composite frame made from aluminum and carbon fiber, and resembled a race car chassis. The bottom ended with a powerful diffuser, increasing the downforce, that is, from the point of view of mechanics XJ220 resembled a road car group C. Of course, as in any luxury car of Jaguar, interior was decorated upper class, which indicated that XJ220 actually positioned as a commercial sport car.
In 1993, the Jaguar XJ220 was registered fo participation in "24 Hours of Le Mans" in the GT class. Behind the wheel was the team from: David #Coulthard, David #Brabham and John #Nielsen, who successfully completed the race and won in class. However, a month ago, XJ220 was disqualified for violating the technical regulations in the exhaust system tuning.
Later XJ220 was transferred to the famous racing team "Team Chamberlain" and continued to participate in the GT class racing, including "24 Hours of Le Mans."
