Year Roundup: The Most Important Nurburgring Lap Records This Year
A list of the fastest cars of the year!
Even though James May doesn't believe in t and despite the critique it gets, the Nurburgring does provide us with a basic understanding of how fast a car is compared to another. Therefore, let's go through the most important lap times this year.
Fastest Production Car - Porsche 911 GT2 RS - 6:47.3 seconds
It's no surprise that a Porsche made it to the top of this list. Whether you're a fan or not, you can't deny their extraordinary performance.
Fastest FWD Car - Honda Civic Type R - 7:43.8
Yet another car that comes under plenty of scrutiny (usually from those who haven't driven it), the Honda Civic Type R shocked us all when it became the fastest FWD car around the Ring.
Fastest 4-door Saloon - Jaguar Project 8 - 7:21.2
If you'd told me at the start of the year that a Jaguar was going to hold the fastest 4-door saloon lap time by the end of the year, I would have laughed at you. But behold - they did it with their Earth shattering Project 8.
Fastest SUV - Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio - 7:51.7
This is another shocker. Once we learnt Alfa was releasing an SUV, we all turned to each other, quickly skimmed over the mixed history of the company in our heads, and at once lost hope. But we were wrong, and this proves that.
Fastest Electric Car - Nio EP9 - 6:45.9
Anyone heard of Nio? We hadn't either. They seemed to explode out of no where and quickly gained top electric car spot on the list. But how long will they be there? Rimac and Tesla both seem to have something cooking.
Fastest Road-Legal Car - McLaren P1 LM - 6:43.2
With only 5 of these cars made by racing team Lanzante, this doesn't count as a production car. However, it is still very much road-legal, and therefore needs to be on the list.
