Yes i know, its a kia
It’s not turning heads, but you’re not twisting your neck in repulse.
Yes I know,…it’s a KIA. A massive underdog, especially in the year 2007, as a Korean automotive maker. Now they are making intriguing strides toward affordable quality vehicles and even taking a stab at performance vehicles, the new Stinger GT.
So why would a young, gentleman like myself, be infatuated with such a seemingly dreary vehicle? Well, for starters, I learned to drive in this vehicle, so obviously I have developed an emotional connection. None the less, this innocent off-roader is boasting a naturally aspirated, 3.8 L V6 engine that delivers 262 hp and 260 ft-lbs of torque to the rear wheels. Basically a Korean muscle car, the first of its kind. My estimate of its 0-60 time would be a rough 6.5 seconds: extensive bias. And it even had an active AWD system that delivers power to the front wheels if traction should be lost. A feature on high end SUVs in the $50 K (CAD) price range and higher. What is even more comforting, is the fact that this very engine is used in the 3.8 L Hyundai Genesis Coupe. However, the ride was very wavy, if that makes sense, the disc brakes were undersized for its weight and technologies were limited. Overall, a fully loaded SUV for roughly 37 K (CAD) was great value for what you were receiving.
In terms of styling, KIA/Hyundai were aiming for restrained luxurious handsomeness. It’s not turning heads, but you’re not twisting your neck in repulse. I especially admire the hood lines that lead into the curves of the body. As you can see I’ve developed a deep passion for this vehicle no one can understand, but I think this narrative is at the heart of being a car enthusiast. I’m sure 90% of people would consider this vehicle utter garbage, but I hope I’ve at least convinced you a little that this particular KIA, in some aspect, is special.
