1987 saw the arrival of both the Jaguar XJR-8 and the Sauber-Mercedes C9 prototypes take on the might of the factory and customer Porsche 962s in the World Sports Car Championship. Jaguar finally dethroned Porsche with Raul Boesel and TWR Jaguar winning the Drivers and Teams titles respectively. Mercedes ran the C9 in a limited number of races during the 1987 season, without a World Championship race win.

Sauber's C9 first full season was in 1988 when it scored five world championship race wins and finished second in the World Championship, again behind TWR Jaguar.

1989 saw Mercedes finally clinch the title dominating the season by winning seven out the eight rounds as well as winning the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans, which was not a round of the World Sports Prototype Championship.

The Sauber C9 for sale is unique in that it is probably the most modern, as well as least driven, Sauber Mercedes available for sale.

From www.sauber-cars-for-sale.com:

The Sauber C9 A2 exhibit without a motor and vehicle electronics was acquired directly from Peter Sauber in 2010 with the intent of turning it into a running condition.

The M117 motor was made ready to start using the assembly instructions of the then tuner Heini Mader and a huge lot of unused original spare parts at Swissauto in Burgdorf. The only unoriginal part was a modern electronic control system for the motor by Helfenstein company. The original Bosch Motronic 1.7 including wiring loom and sensors is given with the car. The aluminum-monocoque was rebuilt by Schwaller Motorsport, Aadorf according to the original's CAD schemes. The assembly was conducted by Käser Fahrzeugbau, Nuglar. The entire construction is well documented with expert reports, photographies, and bills.

Here is Mercedes driver Jochen Mass describing the 1988 version of the C9:
