You won't believe how heavy the GMC Hummer EV pickup will be
Vegeta, what does the scouter say about its weight?
Electric cars are heavy. Pickup trucks are heavy. Mash both types of vehicles together and it's pretty likely that you're going to end up with something that's pretty hefty on the scales. It turns out that's something taken up to eleven when it comes to the forthcoming GMC Hummer pickup truck, as it's reportedly going to tip the scales at over 9,000 lbs!
According to a report from GM-Trucks, the first offering from the Hummer brand's revival will weigh no less than 9,046 lbs (cue all the "it's over 9000!" jokes). That's around 4,103 kg for those of us who prefer to use metric when it comes to weight. If this is 100% true, that would make the truck one of the heaviest passenger cars on sale anywhere. To put that into context, a 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD with a crew cab, dual rear wheels and the LP5 Duramax Diesel engine weighs 8,355 lbs. The Sierra 3500HD is very much a heavy-duty truck!

Why is the truck so heavy? Well, the best guess so far is that it's because of the sheer weight of the Ultium battery system. The Cadillac Lyriq SUV, which will use the same Ultium battery pack, is estimated to weigh in excess of 5,600 lbs. That's even though the Lyriq will only use half of the number of Ultium battery modules as the Hummer!
Unfortunately for those of us who live on the other side of the Atlantic, the crazy weight of this pickup likely means that it'll never get sold outside of North America. In the UK, for example, you're required to have a category C1 license to drive anything that has a maximum allowable weight (MaM) of over 3,500 kg. At a weight of 4,103 kg, the GMC Hummer EV is a sizeable amount over the weight restrictions for a regular category B car license. It would make it kind of financially unviable for General Motors to sell it in the UK as, relatively speaking, barely anyone would legally be allowed to drive it! It's a bit of a shame for those of us who might have been hoping to have a chance at owning something as mental as this in right-hand drive, but it is how it is.
Thankfully, the GMC Hummer EV will have plenty of power and torque to offset its ridiculous weight. It's already known that it'll have in the region of a thousand horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque, enough to propel the gargantuan machine from 0-60 in 3 seconds. The only question now in regards to this is how crazy that power and acceleration will feel in a truck that weighs over 9,000 lbs...
