Zsolt Szabó teams up with Roberto Merhi for a 24h race in Spain
Zsolt will be sharing the wheel with teammates ex-WTCC driver Felix Porteiro, Santiago Porterio and ex-F1 driver Roberto Merhi.
Hungarian touring car driver Zsolt Szabó is preparing for his first 24h race, the 24h Hispalenses karting race in Sevilla where he will be sharing the wheel with teammates ex-WTCC driver Felix Porteiro, Santiago Porterio and ex-F1 driver Roberto Merhi. In the previous seasons Zsolt was racing in ETCC, WTCC and WTCR with Zengő Motorsport, therefore it will be a new, exciting challenge for him.
„The opportunity came very suddenly, I can say unexpectedly. Last year we were karting together, we had great battles every time, they taught and helped me a lot. Sunday evening I got a call that there is a vacant seat in their team and they would be happy if I can join them” – said Zsolt about how this chance came up.
„Obviously I am very excited, because at this level victory has to be the only goal. All of my teammates are champions, so there is quite a lot of pressure on me not to slow them down in any way and meet their expectations.”
„On Friday I am going to have a test on the track. The race will start at midday on Saturday.”

What are your expectations ahead of this race? „Of course travel to Sevilla to win. That’s our target for this race. I think that with a driver line-up like this there is no other option but to win. I have to get used to the track as quickly as possible for Friday and to get close to my teammates’ data during testing.”
„I want to enjoy this one-off opportunity. My teammates are participating in this race just to stay fit, so do I as my goal is to be in my best possible form for the second part of this year and 2020” – revealed Zsolt his longer term goals.
How does it feel to share the wheel with an ex-F1 driver? „It is a huge opportunity for me to learn and gain experience. It’s better to have him as my teammate than to compete against each other. When last summer we were karting together, we had a great time. My lap times compared to him were not as slower as I expected, so I am looking forward how this race goes.”
