askamechanic I don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask this but here goes: I'm a student that loves all things mechanical, whether it be bikes or cars I love em and I was thinking of pursuing a career in mechanics but I don't really know what opportunities would be available in that field I just wanted to know if you have some insight? My major concern is flexibility because I keep hearing that mechanics have horrendous working hours.

I recommend going into heavy equipmet or diesel mechanics. There is a big shortage in that field and you get to work on some really cool equipment. There is (generally speaking) more money in the heavy equipment side of things too. And you can always turn wrench on the fun hobby cars on the side!

That's what I did. I was (and still am) a huge gear head and was planning on going to college for auto mechanics. Well I had a summer job driving tractors that turned into a 2 year job and I really learned to love heavy equipment. I then changed my collage plans and took diesel technology instead. I loved it and never looked back!
